Beautiful made-to-order Stormproof timber windows and doors by Dale, the UK’s fastest growing merchant-distributed timber fenestration supplier, have been specified by developer Amelia Properties for private new build chalet-style homes in West Sussex.
The boutique development of semis and detached properties has been constructed on the site of a single bungalow in the busy village of East Wittering, located just a few miles south of the cathedral city of Chichester. In view of the sea The Witterings, known as ChichesterBeach resort, is a popular location with traditional seaside properties. Much of the unspoilt coastline is protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Using an eco-friendly design that incorporates timber frame, rain water harvesting, solar panels, under floor heating and Dale double glazed Stormproof timber casement windows, French doors and entrance doors, these new homes are thermally efficient, light, spacious and comfortable while low energy consumption will result in reduced CO₂ emissions. The properties reach the Code for Sustainable Homes standards required by the Local Planning Authority as part of the approval process.
Jon Munnery, managing director of Amelia Properties, Birdham, West Sussex, says: “I’m absolutely delighted with the Dale product. I have never used Dale before but my local merchant, Covers, recommended them as a made-to-order bespoke system that’s just right for these high-end properties. They are exceptionally good value, great quality and a perfect match for these eco-properties.”
The site was purchased in January 2011 but planning approvals were delayed by six months while height restrictions were negotiated. “The Planning Authority wanted the new two-storey homes to be no higher than the existing single-storey bungalow and working closely with architect Ben Smith we satisfied planning criteria with a really skilful design and created open plan New England chalet- style homes with balconies, cladding and great views,” continues Jon Munnery.
Dale’s Stormproof windows and doors were specified for the additional protection they provide in areas of severe weather conditions. In this location on the English Channel, subjected to brutal winds that blow in from the coast, the perfect product choice has been made. Stormproof windows feature advanced draught sealing and together with rebated sashes provide robust protection. This design lends itself perfectly to modern buildings, new builds and replacement projects.
Stormproof windows and glazed doors feature highly efficient double glazing units that provide exceptional levels of insulation. High security is achieved with strong multi-point locking mechanisms and internal beading. Stormproof windows by Dale, which are manufactured from engineered timber that won’t twist, stick or warp, have been independently tested for weather tightness and operation & strength tests for both top and side hung windows and exceed the requirements of current BS 6375-1:2009 and BS 6375-2:2009 certification.
Over 200 RAL paint and stain finishes are available from Dale. Cement Grey was specified by Amelia Properties after colour matching with external cladding and other materials.
Covers Timber & Builders’ Merchants of Chichester, who introduced Amelia Properties to Dale, underline ‘price, product and delivery’ as the important criteria for their recommendation. “The Dale product provides us with another avenue in timber fenestration and is perfect for projects where a high specification product with great design is required for our customers bespoke properties. This is where we believe the future is,” says Calvin Smith, doors and windows manager, Covers. “Training on Dale’s bespoke estimating and quotation software is second to none, the after sales and support service is fast and efficient and delivery is always just six weeks after sign off.”
Before starting Amelia Properties almost a decade ago, Jon Munnery specialised in listed buildings for a London-based construction company as site manager. He now specialises in new builds and property refurbishments almost entirely in the West Sussex area. “The properties at East Wittering sold within weeks and we are still receiving enquiries about them,” says Jon. “The style has been very popular and, subject to planning permission, is one that we could utilise again.”
